The Early College School at Delaware State University is proud to announce a historic milestone: scholars Kara McCarthy and Christopher Richardson will be the first students in school history to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree from Delaware State University.

As trailblazers in this innovative academic model, Kara and Christopher represent the power of early access to higher education and the commitment of the Early College School to creating transformational academic opportunities for students across Delaware.

The Early College School at Delaware State University is a tuition-free public charter school uniquely designed to accelerate student learning and college readiness. Approved by the Delaware Department of Education and modeled after progressive early college high schools nationwide, the school provides students with the opportunity to earn high school credits before entering Grade 9. This enables them to take college-level courses during high school and potentially graduate with up to 60 college credits.

"This moment is not just about two outstanding students," said ECS School Administration team. "It’s about the realization of a vision where students can rewrite the timeline of their education and unlock their full potential."

The school’s academic pathway begins as early as Grade 7, intentionally cultivating a college-going culture and preparing students for the rigor of dual enrollment coursework. Over a four-year high school experience, scholars develop the discipline, resilience, and ambition required to thrive in higher education and beyond.

As Kara McCarthy and Christopher Richardson prepare to cross the graduation stage twice this spring, their achievements signal what is possible when bold educational innovation meets student determination.
